Volunteering for the Par and Poker Celebrity Challenge for
Charity 2009

The Joyner-Walker Foundation, Inc., Florida State Golf Association, TPC of Tampa Bay and Tampa Bay Downs’ The Silks Poker Room are very pleased you decided to become a volunteer. Being a volunteer gives something back to your community by providing a helping hand to people, organizations and events. By volunteering you gain benefits as an individual: make new friends, explore career and personal interests, build your résumé, have fun and make a difference. There are many good reasons to get involved with the Par and Poker Celebrity Challenge for Charity 2009 event; see our guidelines below and welcome to the team. Guidelines

  • Volunteers must be able to work a full event shift (one day)
  • Volunteers must provide two means of contact information (email and phone #)
  • Volunteers must attend one training session specific to their selected volunteer assignment and the general meeting (January 2009). Training will take place on evenings and weekends during these sessions
  • All volunteers must sign a waiver before working any assignment
  • Volunteers must provide their own transportation to the event location, training session and general meeting
  • Volunteer opportunities will be provided on an equal basis without regard to age, sex, religion or disabilities
  • Volunteers must be well groomed when working the event
  • No alcohol can be consumed during work shifts
  • Volunteers must wear apparel given to them for the event. Pants or shorts worn must be khaki or tan color. Recommend to wear comfortable shoes (i.e. tennis shoes)
  • Guidelines are subject to change prior to event date

Training session & general meeting

Volunteers are required to attend both the training session and general meeting. Both engagements shouldn’t last more than 1 1/2 hours each. Volunteer and assignment guides will be distributed.

Via email or phone call, locations will be given for the training session and general meeting.

Assignments

Volunteers will be selected for assignments based on experience (first) and recommendation (second). For instance, volunteers that have experience in caddying will be given such task. Many of the assignments ask for certain skill sets, while others require none.

Event Volunteers

Event Volunteers will consist of the following positions: Corporate Tent Attendant, Traffic Control, Expo Center, Volunteer Care, Parking Control, Banquet, Player and Volunteer Registration and Driving/Putting Range Attendant.
Shift Days: Thursday, January 29, 2009  / may be asked to assist in pre-event activities (i.e. junior golf clinics)
Time Commitment: The main entrance to the facility is open from 7:00am to 3:00pm. Positions are available in the morning or afternoon. Shifts are generally 4 to 6 hours long.
Duties: Maintain areas (each position will be given duties). 
Skills Required: No specific skills required.  Must have friendly, outgoing personality.
Training: No special training required. Volunteers are required to attend a volunteer orientation session before the beginning of the tournament.
Volunteers Required: 40 (More may be required)

Caddies

Caddies will be responsible for driving the golf cart for celebrities. Caddies must wear caddy bibs and attend to the celebrity’s bag on the range, course and after the round.
Shift Days: Thursday, January 29, 2009
Time Commitment: Shifts may vary from five to seven hours in duration.
Duties: Tend to celebrity golf bag and course needs.
Skills Required: Must have caddied before and be in good enough physical shape to attend bag. A good eye and understanding of golf is necessary.
Training: No special training required. Volunteers are required to attend a volunteer orientation session before the beginning of the tournament.

Fore Caddies

Fore Caddies will be responsible for the sponsors playing in the tournament. Fore Caddies must wear caddy bibs and attend to the sponsors’ bag on the range, course and after the round. There will be one Fore Caddy per two sponsors. The fore caddy is assigned to the cart.

Skills Required: Must have caddied before and be in good enough physical shape to attend bag. A good eye and understanding of golf is necessary.

Greenside Scorers

The role of the green side scorer is to gather scores from caddies and forecaddies and report it to leader board attendants via walkie-talkie. Must maintain crowd control around greens.

Time Commitment: Shifts may vary from four to six hours in duration
Duties: Gather scores from caddies and fore caddies and report scores to leader board attendants.
Skills Required: Friendly, outgoing personality.
Training: No special training required. Volunteers are required to attend a volunteer orientation session before the beginning of the tournament.

Spotters

Spotters are assigned to specific holes (par 4 & par 5) to spot errand shots of the tee. Spotters are also responsible to maintain crowd control. The main duty is to keep speed of play constant.

Duties: Gather and report scores, and maintain crowd control around greens.
Skills Required: Friendly, outgoing personality.
Training: Special training is required at the volunteer orientation session.

Leader Board Attendants

Gather scores from green side scorers for electronic and/or manual score boards.
Shift Days: Thursday, January 29, 2009
Time Commitment: Shifts may vary from four to eight hours in duration.
Duties: Post scores
Skills Required: Attention to details, friendly, outgoing personality.
Training: No special training required. Volunteers are required to attend a volunteer orientation session before the beginning of the tournament.

Poker Observers

Poker observers must watch the poker tournament and report any illegal or suspicious activities to leads. Poker observers can attend to the public and maintain crowd control.

Duties: Watchful eye on poker tournament
Skills Required: Must understand Poker and its rules.
Training: No special training required. Volunteers are required to attend a volunteer orientation session before the beginning of the tournament.

Rules Officials

Rules officials maintain USGA rules and regulations during play and assist on any callings and/or player inquiries on the course.

Duties: Maintain areas (each position will be given duties).
Skills Required: Maintain USGA rules and regulations
Training: YES – must be certified or worked with the Florida State Golf Association
